The comments are flying in about all of the “deals” we should be able to find on travel in the post-COVID-19 world. Makes sense, right? After all, hotels have been completely shut down for weeks. Airlines have planes literally parked on runways. And travel companies have lost money due to cancellations and postponements. It only makes sense that when travel resumes (which is happening now domestically and very shortly internationally) we could find bargains on hotel rooms, airfares, and travel deals. Right?

Not so much. And here’s why:

The travel and tourism industry has faced a massive loss since Coronavirus (ugh, it pains me to even have to type that word) began. And not only have they lost revenues, but they’ve also had to increase costs to implement new cleaning protocols and systems to ensure they keep guests and travelers safe. Revenues down, costs up. Ouch – double whammy!

Limited capacity. While hotels are starting to reopen, we’re seeing major restrictions on limiting the number of people allowed on-property at one time. Many are opening at 25% capacity, with the most I’ve seen at 50% capacity. In fact, many employees are still working from home to allow for more guests to be on-property. Less rooms = higher rates.

Demand. We’ve all been trapped at home and we’re all talking about when and where we can go next. Like, sign me up for anywhere! After weeks at home, we’re ready to GO.

Postponed travel dates. Most travelers who were supposed to travel in March, April, May, and into June have postponed their travel dates. So in many cases, the limited availability has already been spoken for.
